bling bling – clean your silver jewelry using science

4 Oct

Over the years, I’ve amassed a decent collection of jewelry, some costume and some nice stuff. I have always preferred silver jewelry over gold because I think silver jewelry just looks better with my skin tone, but that is not the point of this posting. If it is something I wear frequently, I don’t take the time to store it properly and usually leave it in an open box which I think causes the brownish color and dirty look which therefore does not look appealing to wear in public.

Cleaning your silver jewelry is extremely simple and cheap with this method. You might even become addicted to doing it and look for anything silver in your house to clean after doing this “experiment,” as I like to call it.

What you need:

  • aluminum foil
  • kettle
  • baking soda
  • small bowl
  • chopstick or anything other than your fingers (to take the jewelry out of the hot water)

1. Collect all of your silver jewelry that needs cleaning and bring it to the kitchen. This is a disgusting looking piece of jewelry…

2. Boil some water. While it is boiling, rip some aluminum foil (or take that piece of aluminum foil you have been reusing if you are Asian, haha) and line the bottom of a small bowl or ramekin. Put the piece of jewelry on top of the foil, like so:

3. Sprinkle some baking soda on it – enough to cover lightly.

4. Pour hot water on top of the jewelry and baking soda just enough to cover the jewelry completely. 5. Watch and be amazed as the dirt magically disappears! There is a science behind it but I’m in Arts so can’t really help you there. Turn the jewelry over so all sides of it become in contact with the aluminum foil at some point during the soak.

6. Leave the jewelry in the bowl for 1-5 minutes until it is clean. Take out and rinse with water (I don’t think it matters if it is cold or warm) and dry gently with a cloth and let it air dry for a bit.
7. Repeat steps 3 to 7 for all of your other pieces.

not so disgusting anymore!

Love this tip! Will use this instead of buying expensive cleaners. LOL at saving foil if Asian…so true!

I’m glad you liked it! Btw, I can’t comment on your blog for some reason…maybe that’s why you haven’t gotten any comments on your latest postings.
